🌱 Through History - Growth Phase Guide

Student Name: ___________________ Date: ___________

📊 What is the Growth Phase?

The Growth Phase happens EVERY TURN after your teacher announces an event and before you take actions. This is when your civilization grows in size and power!

📝 Step-by-Step Walkthrough

1 Add Fertility to Houses
Add your fertility stat to your current houses, but DON'T exceed your population capacity!
New Houses = Current Houses + Fertility
BUT: New Houses cannot exceed Population Capacity
2 Update Population
Calculate your population based on the current year:
Before 480 BCE: Population = Houses × 1
After 480 BCE: Population = Houses × 2
3 Choose Cultural Stage Bonus
Based on your cultural stage, choose ONE bonus to apply:
Stage Choose ONE Bonus
Barbarism +50% martial OR +50% fertility
Classical +50% science OR +50% faith
Imperial +50% industry OR +50% martial
4 Calculate Base Stats from Population
Use the formulas below to calculate your base stats:
Fertility = Population ÷ 10 (round down)
Industry = Population ÷ 5 (round down)
Martial = Population ÷ 10 (round down)
Defense = Population ÷ 10 (round down)
Science = Population ÷ 10 (round down)
Culture = Population ÷ 10 (round down)
5 Apply Trait Multipliers
If you have traits, multiply the relevant stats by 2:
6 Add Building Bonuses
Add bonuses from structures you've built:
Temples: +2 faith each
Amphitheaters: +3 culture, -1 faith each
Walls: +1 defense each
Archimedes Tower: +20 defense
7 Apply Cultural Stage Bonus (from Step 3)
Now apply the bonus you chose in Step 3:
If you chose +50% martial: multiply martial by 1.5
If you chose +50% fertility: multiply fertility by 1.5
(etc.)
8 Reset Industry Left
Your "Industry Left" equals your full Industry stat (any unused industry from last turn is lost)

💡 Complete Example: Egypt's Growth Phase

Starting Status (Year 3,000 BCE):
• Houses: 20
• Population Capacity: 100
• Fertility: 5
• Trait: Strength (2× martial)
• Cultural Stage: Barbarism
• Buildings: 2 Temples, 1 Wall

Step 1: Add Fertility
20 houses + 5 fertility = 25 houses ✓ (under capacity of 100)

Step 2: Update Population
Before 480 BCE, so: Population = 25 × 1 = 25 population

Step 3: Choose Cultural Stage Bonus
Barbarism stage: Choose +50% martial (to boost military)

Step 4: Calculate Base Stats
• Fertility = 25 ÷ 10 = 2 (rounded down from 2.5)
• Industry = 25 ÷ 5 = 5
• Martial = 25 ÷ 10 = 2
• Defense = 25 ÷ 10 = 2
• Science = 25 ÷ 10 = 2
• Culture = 25 ÷ 10 = 2
• Faith = 0 (base)

Step 5: Apply Trait Multipliers
Egypt has Strength trait: Martial = 2 × 2 = 4 martial

Step 6: Add Building Bonuses
• 2 Temples: Faith = 0 + (2 × 2) = 4 faith
• 1 Wall: Defense = 2 + 1 = 3 defense

Step 7: Apply Cultural Stage Bonus
Chose +50% martial: Martial = 4 × 1.5 = 6 martial

Step 8: Reset Industry Left
Industry Left = 5 (full industry available for building this turn)

Final Stats:
Houses: 25, Pop: 25, Fertility: 2, Industry: 5, Martial: 6, Defense: 3, Science: 2, Culture: 2, Faith: 4

💡 Quick Reference: Common Calculations

If Population is... Base Stats (÷10) Industry (÷5)
10 1 2
20 2 4
30 3 6
50 5 10
100 10 20

✅ Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ MISTAKE: Adding fertility when already at capacity
✓ CORRECT: If houses = capacity, you DON'T grow that turn
❌ MISTAKE: Forgetting to double population after 480 BCE
✓ CORRECT: Check the year! After 480 BCE: Population = Houses × 2
❌ MISTAKE: Applying cultural bonus before calculating base stats
✓ CORRECT: Cultural bonuses are applied LAST (Step 7)
❌ MISTAKE: Carrying over unused industry to next turn
✓ CORRECT: Industry resets to full every turn - use it or lose it!
❌ MISTAKE: Forgetting to add building bonuses
✓ CORRECT: Count your temples, amphitheaters, and walls every turn!

🎯 Tips for Success

💡 TIP: Do the math in order! Don't skip steps or you'll get confused.
💡 TIP: Write down your work. Show calculations in the margins of your worksheet.
💡 TIP: Round down ALWAYS. If you get 4.8, it becomes 4, not 5.
💡 TIP: When choosing cultural bonuses, think about your strategy. Need to build? Choose +50% industry!
💡 TIP: Double-check your population calculation. This affects ALL other stats!

Remember: Growth happens EVERY turn - master these steps!
Practice makes perfect. Ask your teacher if you're unsure about any calculation.
